A Mother’s Day Appeal
Dear Friend:
On May 11th, 2008, while many mothers will be spending Mother’s Day with their children, countless others will be alone and incarcerated, unable to see their loved ones.
Women’s Advocate Ministry, Inc. (WAM) remains with the mothers throughout the entire judicial process to help them secure whatever resources are available to keep their families together. More than 75% of those we help are mothers who find themselves separated from their children, including mothers who gave birth while in jail. Most of those who give birth at Rikers Island will find themselves separated from their child before the baby is a year old.
Now in our 25th year, WAM is a crisis intervention program to assist incarcerated women and their children. WAM provides the necessary resources to help incarcerated mothers keep their dignity and humanity.
We judge not their faults, only their needs to remain strong and keep their families intact.
When the children are placed with an extended family member, WAM will provide resources and support to lessen the trauma for the whole family. WAM also has strong community partnerships that can provide mentoring with the children of an incarcerated parent.
In order to maintain our strength in helping these women, we look to our community for support. Through the generous support of friends like you, we are able to provide assistance when it seems that all is lost for these women. WAM cannot do it alone; we need your financial support now more than ever to continue being a voice for the voiceless.
Please open your heart to a mother who has lost what is most dear to her.
Mother’s Day can be the loneliest day of the year for those incarcerated. Please help us provide much-needed resources to those who desperately need your help so that these mothers can become productive and integral members of the community.
Shalom,
